Rolex price history: what decades of sale records show

Rolex price history from our records: auction results since the late 1990s, forum listings marked sold since 2006 and eBay sold prices since 2023.

Most Rolex price charts online start in the last few years. Ours go back much further, because we combine three kinds of sale records with very different time spans. This post explains what each record covers, what the long-run history shows across references, and how to read it without being misled.

For the history of one collection, the collection pages are the place to start, for example the Submariner or GMT-Master II. This post is the site-wide view. It describes the past and is not financial advice.

Three records, three time spans

Record What a figure is How far back Feeds current ranges?
Auction results Sold price including the buyer's premium Late 1990s for some references Yes
Forum archive Listed price when the post was marked sold 2006 No, history only
eBay sold listings Completed sale price Last three years Yes

Across all three we hold 20,973 auction results, 44,070 forum posts marked sold and 87,061 eBay sold results.

For one collection at a time, our price history pages chart these records year by year: the Rolex Submariner price history, Rolex Daytona price history, Rolex GMT-Master II price history, Rolex Datejust price history and Rolex Oyster Perpetual price history.

Auction results are the deepest record for vintage pieces. They are also sparse: a reference might sell a few times a quarter, so we plot auction history by quarter.

The forum archive covers posts on Reddit r/Watchexchange, RolexForums and WatchUSeek that sellers marked sold. It is the longest continuous record for modern references, going back to 2006. The figure is the price the seller listed, not a confirmed sale price, so we always label it "listed price when marked sold" and never use it in a current price range.

eBay sold listings are the densest record but the shortest: three years. They carry most of the weight in today's ranges.

How we build a long-run line

The rules are simple and published on our methodology page.

  1. Each series is bucketed by month, or by quarter when monthly data is too thin.
  2. A bucket appears only with at least three sales. Thin periods are left as gaps; we never draw a line through missing data.
  3. A reference gets a long-run summary only when its earliest series spans at least five years with at least six buckets. That is why eBay-only references, with three years of data, have a chart but no long-run summary.
  4. The summary compares the first year's median with the median of the last twelve months, and names the highest bucket with its date and sales count.

What modern references show

These are modern steel references with long records. Each history figure names its series; forum figures are listed prices when marked sold.

Ranges and the worth-about figure are for a pre-owned watch with box and papers, from recorded sale results, prices last updated October 26, 2026. Each reference page shows the full evidence.

Three things to read in the table.

  • The long climb. The Change column measures today's median against each reference's first year in our records, so it shows how much of the long run a reference has kept.
  • The boom years. Check whether the Highest point falls in 2021 or 2022. Fortune's April 2024 coverage of the Bloomberg Subdial Watch Index described prices for the most coveted pre-owned watches reaching unprecedented levels in 2021 and early 2022.
  • The settle. Compare the last twelve months with the highest point. Time+Tide's summary of the Morgan Stanley and WatchCharts report described falls across the secondary market in 2023 and 2024, followed by a recovery in 2025.

The Datejust 116200 is in the table as a dress-watch check on the four sports models. Compare where its highest point falls with theirs before assuming the whole catalog moved together.

What vintage and older references show

For vintage and older discontinued pieces the deepest record is usually auction results, which for some references start in the late 1990s.

Reference First year First-year median Last 12 months Change Highest point
Rolex GMT-Master 1675 1999 $2,650 (median of auction results in 1999, 5 sales) $12,700 (median of auction results in the 12 months to October 26, 2026, 31 sales) up 379% on 1999 (median of auction results) $38,800 in Q2 2021 (highest quarterly median of auction results, 12 sales)
Rolex Submariner 5513 1999 $3,350 (median of auction results in 1999, 4 sales) $13,000 (median of auction results in the 12 months to October 26, 2026, 21 sales) up 288% on 1999 (median of auction results) $21,300 in Q4 2016 (highest quarterly median of auction results, 6 sales)
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 16520 1999 $7,000 (median of auction results in 1999, 3 sales) $32,000 (median of auction results in the 12 months to October 26, 2026, 24 sales) up 357% on 1999 (median of auction results) $45,700 in Q2 2026 (highest quarterly median of auction results, 7 sales)
Rolex Explorer 1016 1999 $3,750 (median of auction results in 1999, 4 sales) $13,100 (median of auction results in the 12 months to October 26, 2026, 8 sales) up 249% on 1999 (median of auction results) $25,200 in Q4 2020 (highest quarterly median of auction results, 3 sales)

Starting points here can be much earlier, so a long-run change measures across a longer span than for the modern references above. Compare the Highest point column: vintage peaks need not line up with each other, or with the boom in modern sports models. Vintage pieces don't move as one market. Our vintage Rolex guide covers them in more detail.

Auction prices for vintage pieces also depend heavily on the individual watch: original dial, case condition and provenance. A quarterly median of a few sales can swing on which watches happened to come up, which is why a vintage range can carry a moderate or low confidence label. Each reference page shows its own.

Where the records overlap

For the last three years, many references have both forum and eBay records, which lets us check one against the other. Over the 24 months to October 2026, among references with at least five sales in each, the forum median came out slightly above the eBay sold median for the typical reference, with most references close together and a few further apart. We keep forum figures out of current ranges for two reasons: adding them didn't improve accuracy in our backtest, and they are listed prices, not completed sales. For history, where nothing else reaches back as far, they are a useful guide to the level.

Auction and eBay records overlap too. Of the 209 published references with both, 170 have the eBay median over the last twelve months below the auction median. Our post on eBay vs auction Rolex prices covers that gap reference by reference.

None of this changes the long-run picture. It does mean you should compare a forum-based history with a forum-based history, and an auction-based one with an auction-based one.

Reading a price history without being misled

  • Check the series. Auction, forum and eBay figures are different kinds of price. The chart legend names each and gives its sales count.
  • Check the starting year. A history that begins in 2008, near a low, will show a bigger rise than one that begins in 2018.
  • Check the bucket counts. A peak from three sales is a weaker signal than a median of dozens. Every bucket on our charts shows its count on hover and in the table view.
  • Don't read the gaps. Missing buckets mean too few sales, not a price of zero or a flat market.
  • Separate history from the current range. The long-run line is context. The current "worth about" figure comes from recent sold results only.

What history can and can't tell you

Long-run records show how each reference's prices moved over a decade or more, including the stretches of falling prices that outside reporting describes after the 2022 high. They don't show causes, and they don't promise anything about the next decade. If you own a watch and want to know what it would fetch now, the current range on its reference page is the number to use, and our sell page starts from it.

Frequently asked questions

How far back does Rolex price history go?

Our auction records for some references go back to the late 1990s, our forum archive to 2006, and our eBay sold records cover the last three years. How far back a given reference goes depends on how often it sold in each source.

When did Rolex prices peak?

It depends on the reference, which is why every reference page shows its own highest monthly or quarterly median with its date and sales count, rather than one market date. For outside context, Fortune's coverage of the Bloomberg Subdial index describes the most coveted pre-owned watches peaking in 2021 and early 2022.

Are forum prices real sale prices?

No. Forum figures are the price the seller listed when the post was marked sold. We label them that way everywhere, and they never feed our current price ranges. They are useful for long-run history because they go back to 2006.

Can price history predict future Rolex prices?

No. History shows how prices behaved, including falls. It is not financial advice and says nothing certain about what comes next.
