The Paul Newman Daytona at a glance
The Paul Newman Daytona on this page is the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona reference 6239 fitted with the so-called exotic dial. Rolex made the 6239 from 1963 until 1969, when the next Daytona generation took over, so it has long been discontinued. It came in either steel or yellow gold, with an engraved tachymeter bezel and a hand-wound Valjoux 72-based Rolex calibre 722, later 722-1. It was the first Daytona with sub-dials in a contrasting colour to the main dial. Sources disagree on its case size, partly depending on whether the bezel is measured, so we don't give one.
The name belongs to the dial, not to the reference: the Paul Newman Daytona is named after the actor, and the earliest examples are 6239s with a black or white exotic dial. Newman's own Daytona was sold at Phillips in New York in 2017 for what was then a record price for a wristwatch at auction. The exotic dial also appears on later vintage Daytona references, which are priced separately.
Where the price stands right now:
- Fair value now: $94,600–$254,000.
- Midpoint of recent market prices: $146,000.
- Newest observation: July 3, 2026.
- Observations behind the estimate: 9.
Sales of these watches are rare and each one is different, so expect the data to be thin.
What affects the price
The dial. Only a 6239 with the exotic dial is a Paul Newman Daytona. Dial colour and condition, and whether the dial is original to the watch, drive value more than anything else.
Case metal. Steel and yellow gold 6239s are separate markets; compare like with like.
Condition and originality. Ranges by condition (a condition shows a range only once it has enough results of its own):
- Unworn: not enough market data yet.
- Excellent: $114,000–$211,000.
- Good: not enough market data yet.
- Fair: not enough market data yet.
For a vintage watch, "condition" includes whether the case has been polished and whether the hands, pushers and bezel are period-correct.
Provenance. Documented history, original sale papers and auction records add confidence for buyers.
Recent movement. Once there is enough sale history, this shows how prices have moved over the past year.
Tips for buyers
- Confirm the reference is 6239 and that the dial is an exotic Paul Newman dial, not a standard Daytona dial.
- Insist on inspection by a specialist in vintage Daytonas before paying, and get their findings in writing.
- Ask for provenance: previous auction records, papers, service history.
- Compare any asking price with recorded auction results for similar dial and metal combinations.
Tips for sellers
- Have the watch assessed by a vintage Rolex specialist before you set expectations.
- Gather every document you have: papers, receipts, service records and previous auction catalogue entries.
- Don't have the case polished or parts replaced before selling.
- For a watch at this level, compare auction houses with specialist dealers and ask each for their estimate in writing.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Paul Newman Daytona?
A Paul Newman Daytona is a vintage Rolex Cosmograph Daytona fitted with the so-called exotic dial, which later became known by the actor's name. The earliest are reference 6239 watches, made from 1963 until 1969.
Why is it called the Paul Newman Rolex?
The exotic dial became known as the Paul Newman dial after the actor. His own Daytona was sold at Phillips in New York in 2017 for a record price for a wristwatch at auction.
What is a Paul Newman Daytona worth?
Our current fair-value estimate for the 6239 with the Paul Newman dial is $94,600–$254,000, based on 9 market observations. For watches this rare, each sale depends heavily on originality and provenance.
Where can I sell a Paul Newman Daytona?
Auction houses and specialist vintage watch dealers are the usual routes for a 6239 with the Paul Newman dial. Have it assessed by a specialist first, gather every document you have, and ask each buyer for a written estimate.
How can I tell a real Paul Newman Daytona from a fake?
Treat every example as needing specialist inspection. A genuine 6239 has a hand-wound Valjoux 72-based Rolex calibre 722 (later 722-1) and an engraved tachymeter bezel. Dial authenticity and originality need an expert who works with vintage Daytonas, ideally with auction-house or specialist documentation.
