Steel vs gold Rolex resale: what sold prices show, model by model

Steel vs gold Rolex resale from our sold data: each metal's market price against its list price, converted at the ECB rate, plus long-run results by model.

Steel or gold is one of the first choices a Rolex buyer makes, and resale is one of the first questions that follows. Our sold data answers it on two different measures.

  • Against list price: for each model below, the steel, two-tone and gold versions sit side by side with their market price set against their list price, converted at the ECB rate.
  • Over the long run: older steel and two-tone siblings are compared on their change since their first year in our records, and the winner depends on the pair.

This describes how prices have behaved. It is not financial advice.

How we compare

We use our "worth about" figure, a recency-weighted median of sold prices normalised to a pre-owned watch with box and papers. It comes from 108,034 sold results, eBay and auction, never asking prices.

List prices are the ones each reference page shows: the January 2026 French list price, including VAT, from 41watch cross-checked with Monochrome Watches. Because the list is in local currency and the market price is in US terms, we convert each list price into US terms at the European Central Bank rate for its list date and show the gap in a "Market vs list" column. The French list includes VAT, so VAT raises only the list side, so a market figure a little below list can come from tax alone; read the larger gaps.

Rolex GMT-Master II 126710BLNR “Batgirl” Oystersteel €11,650 (retail list price in France per 41watch, January 2026) $18,400 about 35% above its France list price (EUR, VAT included, at the ECB rate of January 2, 2026)

Compare the two-tone Root Beer's worth-about figure with the steel and solid Everose gold references in the table: its place in that order comes from the data and can change. The last column shows how each one sits against list.

Datejust 41

Reference Metal List price Worth about Market vs list
Rolex Datejust 41 126300 Oystersteel €8,650–€8,850 (retail list price in France per 41watch and Monochrome Watches, January 2026, depending on dial and bracelet) $10,400 up to about 3% above its France list prices, by dial and bracelet (EUR, VAT included, at the ECB rate of January 2, 2026)
Rolex Datejust 41 126334 White Rolesor €11,350–€11,550 (retail list price in France per 41watch and Monochrome Watches, January 2026, depending on dial and bracelet) $14,400 about 6% to 8% above its France list prices, by dial and bracelet (EUR, VAT included, at the ECB rate of January 2, 2026)
Rolex Datejust 41 126333 Yellow Rolesor €16,100–€18,900 (retail list price in France per 41watch and Monochrome Watches, January 2026, depending on dial and bracelet) $15,000 about 21% to 32% below its France list prices, by dial and bracelet (EUR, VAT included, at the ECB rate of January 2, 2026)

On the Datejust, white Rolesor is steel with a white gold bezel, while yellow Rolesor adds yellow gold to the bezel and the bracelet's center links. Compare the three gaps to see how much the gold content moves the resale picture.

The all-gold Day-Date, and platinum

Some models come only in precious metal. The Day-Date 40 is the clearest example, and it lets us compare gold with platinum directly.

Reference Metal List price Worth about Market vs list
Rolex Day-Date 40 228238 18k yellow gold €46,700–€57,500 (retail list price in France per 41watch and Monochrome Watches, January 2026, depending on dial and bracelet) $44,600 about 19% to 34% below its France list prices, by dial and bracelet (EUR, VAT included, at the ECB rate of January 2, 2026)
Rolex Day-Date 40 228239 18k white gold €50,200 (retail list price in France per 41watch and Monochrome Watches, January 2026) $41,900 about 29% below its France list price (EUR, VAT included, at the ECB rate of January 2, 2026)
Rolex Day-Date 40 228235 18k Everose gold €50,200 (retail list price in France per 41watch and Monochrome Watches, January 2026) $50,700 about 14% below its France list price (EUR, VAT included, at the ECB rate of January 2, 2026)
Rolex Day-Date 40 228236 Platinum €66,900–€71,500 (retail list price in France per 41watch and Monochrome Watches, January 2026, depending on dial and bracelet) $72,600 about 7% to 13% below its France list prices, by dial and bracelet (EUR, VAT included, at the ECB rate of January 2, 2026)
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 126506 Platinum €82,100–€88,500 (retail list price in France per 41watch and Monochrome Watches, January 2026, depending on dial and bracelet) $134,000 about 29% to 39% above its France list prices, by dial and bracelet (EUR, VAT included, at the ECB rate of January 2, 2026)

Within the Day-Date 40, the three golds and platinum share the case and movement, so the market vs list column isolates the metal. The platinum Daytona is there as a second platinum reference. Platinum references sell rarely, so their ranges can rest on few sales; check the confidence level on each page before reading much into them.

Over the long run: steel and two-tone siblings

For discontinued references there is no list price, so we compare long-run change. Each figure names its series; a forum figure is the listed price when the post was marked sold, not a confirmed sale price.

Steel Change Two-tone sibling Change
Rolex Submariner Date 16610 up 124% on 2008 (median listed price of forum posts marked sold) Rolex Submariner Date 16613 up 54% on 2007 (median listed price of forum posts marked sold)
Rolex GMT-Master II 16710 up 225% on 2008 (median listed price of forum posts marked sold) Rolex GMT-Master II 16713 up 151% on 2009 (median listed price of forum posts marked sold)
Rolex Submariner Date 116610LN up 67% on 2010 (median listed price of forum posts marked sold) Rolex Submariner Date 116613LN up 68% on 2009 (median listed price of forum posts marked sold)
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116520 up 91% on 2007 (median listed price of forum posts marked sold) Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116523 up 126% on 2010 (median listed price of forum posts marked sold)

Compare the two change columns row by row; there is no reason to expect the same winner in every pair. Starting years differ between references, so treat each row as its own comparison, and check the reference page for the exact years and sales counts behind each figure.

Liquidity: how often each metal sells

The number of sales matters as much as the price when you come to sell. Compare the sales counts for the three Submariner metals:

Reference Metal Sold results behind the range Confidence
Rolex Submariner Date 126610LN Oystersteel 1,017 high confidence
Rolex Submariner Date 126613LN Yellow Rolesor 150 high confidence
Rolex Submariner Date 126618LN 18k yellow gold 10 moderate confidence

Fewer sales means a wider effective range and, often, a lower confidence level. For a seller, that can mean more variation between offers.

Context from list prices

List prices move every year, and the metals don't move together. Monochrome's coverage of the January 2026 French price list reported modest increases for steel models and larger ones for gold. Luxury Bazaar reported a second increase on 1 June 2026 that applied to gold and two-tone models but not to steel, platinum, titanium or white Rolesor.

That context explains why a list-price comparison can shift during a year. It does not, on its own, explain the resale gap, and our sales data can't separate the causes.

What this means in practice

If you are buying new, the list-price comparison is the one that matters on day one. Where the market vs list figure is clearly positive, a watch bought at list has been worth at least what you paid on the pre-owned market. Where it is clearly negative, it has been worth less the day you leave the shop, even if its market price is rising.

If you are buying pre-owned, the same gap works in your favour wherever the market sits below list: you pay the market price, not the list price, so the difference has already been absorbed by the first owner.

If you are selling, compare your watch with the market price for its exact reference and metal, not with its list price. For gold, expect fewer comparable sales and a wider spread of offers.

A checklist before choosing a metal for resale

  • Compare the exact references, not "steel" and "gold" in general; one model's metals can behave differently from another's.
  • Check the sales count: a heavily traded reference is easier to sell at a predictable price.
  • Look at the long-range chart for the older generation of the same model.
  • Remember that "below list" is not "losing value": compare a reference's market vs list figure with its twelve-month change on its page.

Our Rolex cost page lists every current reference with its list price, and each reference page shows where the market sits against it.

Frequently asked questions

Does a steel or gold Rolex have better resale value?

Measured against list price, compare the steel and gold versions of the model you want: this article converts each list price and shows the gap for both. Measured in money, a gold watch still sells for more because it starts higher.

Is two-tone Rolex resale worse than steel?

Compare the three metals of the same model: the tables here show where two-tone (Rolesor) sits against list next to steel and solid gold. Over the long run, older two-tone and steel siblings are compared pair by pair, and the result varies.

Why do gold Rolex watches sell below retail?

Where one does, our sales data shows the gap, not the reason. One piece of context: published price lists show gold list prices rising faster than steel in 2026, which widens the distance between list and the used market.

Should I buy steel instead of gold to protect value?

This post describes historical prices, not advice, and it is not financial advice. Buy the watch you want to wear; if resale matters to you, check the reference page for the exact model and metal.
