Discontinued Rolex prices: how retired references trade today
Discontinued Rolex prices from sold results: the Hulk, Batman, Pepsi, 116500LN Daytona and more, compared with the references that replaced them.
When Rolex retires a reference, the supply of new watches stops and the pre-owned market becomes the only market. People often assume that means the price goes up. Our sold data says it depends on the reference, and the clearest way to see that is to put each retired reference next to the one that replaced it.
Everything below comes from sold results only, normalised to a pre-owned watch with box and papers. It describes how prices have behaved and is not financial advice.
Retired references, side by side with their successors
| Retired reference | Years | Worth about | Successor | Worth about |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rolex Submariner Date 116610LV “Hulk” | 2010 to 2020 | $19,100 | Rolex Submariner Date 126610LV “Starbucks” | $14,800 |
| Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116500LN | 2016 to 2023 | $29,700 | Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 126500LN | $32,600 |
| Rolex GMT-Master II 116710BLNR “Batman” | 2013 to 2019 | $15,000 | Rolex GMT-Master II 126710BLNR “Batgirl” | $18,400 |
Compare the two worth-about figures in each row. The Hulk, with its green dial and green bezel, has no exact current equivalent; its successor has a black dial with a green bezel. The steel Daytona and the Batman were replaced by close successors, so for those two pairs the comparison is nearer to like for like.
Production years come from our catalog, which cites a source for each.
Two more pairs
| Retired reference | Years | Successor | Retired: 12 months | Successor: 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rolex Submariner Date 116610LN | 2010 to 2020 | Rolex Submariner Date 126610LN | +7.3% over 12 months | +5.0% over 12 months |
| Rolex Explorer II 216570 | 2011 to 2021 | Rolex Explorer II 226570 | +4.6% over 12 months | +3.8% over 12 months |
Read these pairs on two separate facts: the level, which is each reference page's worth-about figure, and the twelve-month change in the table. A retired model can sit below its successor and still move faster over a year, or the reverse, so neither fact stands in for the other.
These two pairs also show the most common case. The retired and current models look much alike, so buyers can choose between them on price, condition and the details that changed between generations. Where the retired model has no close current equivalent, as with the Hulk, that choice doesn't exist.
Movement over the past year
The question for an owner is often less "is it above the new one?" and more "what has it done lately?".
| Reference | Status | Change | Volatility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rolex Submariner Date 116610LV “Hulk” | Discontinued | +4.3% over 12 months | Stable |
| Rolex Submariner Date 126610LV “Starbucks” | Current | +2.6% over 12 months | Stable |
| Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116500LN | Discontinued | +8.2% over 12 months | Moving |
| Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 126500LN | Current | +4.6% over 12 months | Moving |
| Rolex GMT-Master II 116710BLNR “Batman” | Discontinued | +5.9% over 12 months | Stable |
| Rolex GMT-Master II 126710BLNR “Batgirl” | Current | +6.3% over 12 months | Stable |
Read the table pair by pair. If retired references moved as a separate market, their twelve-month changes would differ from their successors' in one consistent direction; check whether these do in this export before assuming retirement is driving a price.
The recent retirements
Our catalog records several retirements in the last two years; two of them are covered here.
The Pepsi GMT-Master II 126710BLRO
Our catalog records the steel Pepsi GMT-Master II as reported discontinued in 2026 (Rolex did not confirm it, per the catalog's source). It is one of several references on our GMT-Master II collection page. Bloomberg's March 2026 report, republished by SWI swissinfo.ch, said its price on the Bloomberg Subdial Watch Index had risen since the start of the year amid speculation it had been discontinued, and cited WatchPro reporting that some dealers confirmed no more deliveries. Rolex declined to comment in that report.
Our own data for it:
- Worth about: $23,900, range $17,900–$29,900.
- Change: +18.1% over 12 months.
- Volatility: Stable, confidence: high confidence.
- Last retail list price: €11,450–€11,650 (last retail list price in France per 41watch and Monochrome Watches, January 2026, depending on dial and bracelet).
Set its twelve-month change against the basket median of +9.6% in our Rolex price index to see how it compares with the typical reference. We show the move; we don't claim the discontinuation caused it.
The Oyster Perpetual 41 124300
The Oyster Perpetual 41 124300 was replaced by the 134300, according to our catalog's cited source. The retired 124300 shows +7.0% over 12 months and the new 134300 shows -2.6% over 12 months. Read the second figure with care: the successor has only been on the market since 2025, so its earlier window is short.
The long view on retired references
Discontinued references with years of sales let us look past the last twelve months. Each figure below names its series; a forum figure is the listed price when the post was marked sold, not a confirmed sale.
| Reference | History starts | Change since the first year | Highest point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rolex Submariner Date 116610LV “Hulk” | 2010 | up 159% on 2010 (median listed price of forum posts marked sold) | $27,500 in February 2022 (highest monthly median listed price of forum posts marked sold, 4 posts) |
| Rolex GMT-Master II 116710BLNR “Batman” | 2013 | up 66% on 2013 (median listed price of forum posts marked sold) | $19,900 in March 2022 (highest monthly median listed price of forum posts marked sold, 4 posts) |
| Rolex Explorer 214270 | 2010 | up 32% on 2010 (median listed price of forum posts marked sold) | $11,200 in May 2022 (highest monthly median listed price of forum posts marked sold, 4 posts) |
| Rolex Explorer II 216570 | 2011 | up 9% on 2011 (median listed price of forum posts marked sold) | $12,400 in May 2021 (highest monthly median listed price of forum posts marked sold, 8 posts) |
| Rolex Oyster Perpetual 41 124300 | 2020 | up 20% on 2020 (median listed price of forum posts marked sold) | $20,000 in March 2022 (highest monthly median listed price of forum posts marked sold, 3 posts) |
Compare each highest point with today's figure on the reference page. The long-run change depends heavily on when a record starts: the Hulk was made from 2010 and the Oyster Perpetual 41 124300 from 2020, so their records begin at very different points relative to the boom. Retirement is no protection from a fall, so check each chart rather than assume.
The Explorer 214270 and the Explorer II 216570 are useful examples of quiet retirements: both left the catalog in 2021 with little fanfare. Their volatility labels today are Moving for the 214270 and Stable for the 216570. Not every discontinued reference becomes a talking point.
What makes one retired reference different from another
Our data can show which retired references trade above their successors. It can't show why, and we don't attribute causes we can't source. These are the features that can set one retired reference apart from another:
- No direct replacement. The Hulk's dial and bezel combination is not in the current catalog.
- Long, documented history. References with many years of sales give buyers and sellers a clear reference point.
- Steady sales. References with many recent sales can earn higher-confidence ranges, so a price is easier to agree.
None of these is a rule, and none predicts the next move.
What retirement changes for a seller
A retired reference has a fixed number of watches in circulation, and every sale is pre-owned. In practice that changes three things for a seller.
- Condition carries more of the price. With no new examples, buyers compare your watch with other used ones, so originality, service history and the completeness of the set carry more weight.
- Comparable sales are the price. There is no list price to anchor to. The range on the reference page, built from recent sold results, is the reference point a buyer will use.
- Thin references need patience. A rarely traded retired reference may carry a moderate or low confidence label. Expect offers to vary more.
Checking a discontinued reference you own
- Find the exact reference on its page via our pre-owned Rolex guide or the collection page, such as the Submariner.
- Compare it with its successor's page: range, twelve-month change and volatility.
- Read the long-range chart for where the 2022 high sits against today.
- Check the confidence level and the number of sold results behind the range.
- Remember the range assumes box and papers; a watch-only sale typically sells 13% lower in our eBay measurements.
If you are thinking of selling, our sell page starts from the same data and lets you request offers to compare with the range.
Frequently asked questions
Do discontinued Rolex watches go up in value?
Some do and some don't. In our data, some retired references trade above the model that replaced them and others below, and the pairs in this post show the current figures side by side. Discontinuation alone doesn't decide it, and this is not financial advice.
Is the Pepsi GMT-Master II discontinued?
Our catalog records the steel 126710BLRO as reported discontinued in 2026; its cited source says Rolex did not confirm it. Bloomberg reported in March 2026 that its secondary price had risen amid speculation about discontinuation, and that some dealers had confirmed no more deliveries.
Is a discontinued Rolex worth more than the current model?
Not as a rule. This post sets the Hulk against the Starbucks, the previous steel Daytona against the current one and four more pairs side by side, with each pair's current figures. Compare the two reference pages for the pair you care about.
Where can I see prices for older discontinued references?
Every catalog reference has its own page. Our pre-owned and vintage guides group them, and each published page shows the current range, the sales behind it and long-run history where we have it.
